Fly Fishing
Exclusive Fly Fishing for Our Guests Only — No Crowds, Just Peace and Privacy.
The prime time for trout fishing at Schaefer’s Halt is from March to August. For those who love the art of angling, Schaefer’s Halt is a tranquil haven. Professional fly-fishing tuition or clinics can be booked at The Village Angler in Dullstroom.
Guests can:
Cast a line in our two well-stocked ponds, home to rainbow trout.
Try their hand at bass fishing in our third dam
Whether you’re a seasoned fly fisher or a beginner eager to learn, our waters provide the ideal backdrop for a relaxing and rewarding experience. Please note that fishing is reserved exclusively for our overnight guests—no day visitors are allowed. This ensures that you can enjoy the peaceful setting without crowded dams, giving you the privacy and space you deserve.
Fishing Policy:
A fishing permit of R200 per person covers the duration of your stay, giving you plenty of time to unwind and enjoy this beloved pastime.
Fly-fishing rods ONLY
Barbless Flies ONLY
Strictly Catch and Release
The following are not allowed:
- Fixed spools, spinning reels, baiting/lure casting reels.
- Spoon and spinners.
- Keep nets.
Fish Handling: Please ensure your hands and net are wet before handling any fish and keep the fish in the water at all times where possible. Dry hands can damage the trout’s protective slime layer, increasing the risk of infection and reducing the fish’s chance of survival after release.
Fishing Fine: Please note when fishing, if catch and release is not done correctly, a tariff of R320 per kilogram will be charged.
Stocking & Fishing Conditions:
To ensure excellent fishing conditions for our guests, we regularly stock our dams during the cooler months (March and September). During this period, rainbow trout ranging from 500 grams to 2.5 kilograms are introduced. Stocking in cooler months ensures healthier, more abundant fish for our guests to enjoy. Please note that the size of trout stocked depends on availability from the fisheries, but we always strive to provide healthy, quality fish for a rewarding experience.
Things to do on the Farm
The farm was established in 1846 and was lovingly taken on by new owners in March 2024.
This scenic property has fly-fishing in two regularly stocked, medium ponds, as well as access to river fishing. Bird watching, walking, hiking and stargazing can all be enjoyed on this farm which boasts stunning views, waterfalls, birds and indigenous wild flowers.
“ To rest sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.” -John Lubbock
